Hon. Gloria Owusu, MP for Trobu to Mobilize Protests Over Politically Motivated CJ Removal

Hon. Gloria Owusu, Member of Parliament for Trobu, has expressed deep concern over what she describes as an unconstitutional attempt by the ruling NDC government to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a strongly worded statement, Hon. Owusu alleged that the government is proceeding with efforts to oust the Chief Justice without first establishing a prima facie case, as required under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. She warned that such a move threatens not only judicial independence but also undermines progress in gender equity.

“At a time when the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024 is meant to enhance women’s representation and Ghana remains committed to Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality, the silence from many women activists is alarming,” she stated.

Hon. Owusu, a vocal advocate for women’s rights, vowed to take action, declaring that she would lead street protests if necessary to resist what she perceives as a politically motivated attack on the Chief Justice.

“This is not just about one individual; it is about defending our democratic principles and ensuring that gender inclusion remains a priority,” she emphasized.

Her remarks add to growing concerns among legal and political observers about the potential implications of the government’s actions on Ghana’s judiciary and broader democratic stability.
