A severe water crisis is affecting about 10 communities in the central region following the shutdown of Kwanyarko Headworks by the Ghana Water Company. The shutdown was as result of heavy silt accumulation due to illegal mining activities moving towards the Ayensu River.

Speaking to the media after touring the site, Miracles Aboagye indicated that despite the government assurrance to tacle the issue of illegal mining, the current situation shows how galamsey is worsening.

''These galamseyers are mining in Eastern Region, and the effect of the mining in Eastern Region is what we are seeing in Central Region. 11 districts are affected by this Ayensu river situation.

He encouraged the government to find alternative solution in fighting illegal mining while providing safe and healthy drinking water for the people of Kwanyarko and the neighbouring communities affected by the shutdown.

''Whiles we urged the government to fight this and win it, we appeal to the government to put some interim measures for the community. They need boreholes urgently''.

He stressed that the communities needs safe drinking water urgently and as such they cannot wait to have the river clean before using it.

''What I have seen with my eyes, and what all of you, our friends from the media, you've seen with your eyes, you agree that we cannot wait till this water is clean to the level that was before''.
