Police Foil Planned Robbery of Three Banks at Labone; Two Suspects Killed
Accra, August 13, 2026 — The Ghana Police Service has foiled an alleged robbery attempt targeting three banks at Labone in Accra, resulting in the arrest of one suspect and the death of two others during a shootout with police.
According to the Police, the operation followed intelligence received at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, indicating that a robbery gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located at Labone.
A police response team was immediately deployed to the area, where the suspected robbers were reportedly spotted in vehicles parked close to the banks.
Suspects attempt to escape
The Police said one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects noticed the presence of officers.
A pursuit ensued, leading to the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi, who was allegedly travelling in the vehicle. Another occupant of the vehicle reportedly managed to escape.
The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police.
The Police said officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspected members of the gang.
Vehicles and weapon recovered
Following the operation, the Police recovered two vehicles believed to have been used by the suspects.
They were:
- Toyota Highlander — Registration GS 1434-18
- Hyundai Tucson — Registration GS 7915-17
A blow pistol was also reportedly recovered.
Investigation ongoing
The arrested suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, is currently in police custody and is assisting investigators with the ongoing inquiry.
The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for what it described as the successful prevention of the planned robbery.
The Service also expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing information that helps the police identify and disrupt criminal activities.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations to establish the identities of the deceased suspects, locate the escaped suspect and determine the full extent of the alleged robbery plot.
