Violent Protest at Tamale Technical University Over Fees, Facilities Leaves Students Injured

Tamale, Northern Region — September 16, 2025 — Students at Tamale Technical University (TaTU) were injured today during a protest over fee hikes, worsening campus infrastructure, and poor sanitation. The demonstration, which began peacefully, escalated into clashes with security.

At least three students were hurt—two with head injuries and one with a leg wound—after tensions rose when protestors blocked access roads and security intervened.

Protestors complained that despite paying a “developmental levy,” they had seen little improvement in facilities. Sanitation was a major point of grievance, with some students forced to use unsafe toilet arrangements and describe situations of open defecation.

After setting fire to tyres at several spots on campus and near the administration block, the police were deployed. Reports say they restored calm, though not before students and some officers were injured.

University management described the turn to violence as “regrettable and unfortunate,” stating they will hold crisis meetings to address the students’ demands.
