13 Reportedly Killed in Multiple Vehicle Crash at Ofankor Barrier

At least 13 people have reportedly died following a multiple vehicle crash at the Ofankor Barrier on the Ofankor–John Teye stretch in the Greater Accra Region.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday and involved a Sprinter bus, two loaded tipper trucks, an Aboboyaa tricycle and other vehicles, according to preliminary information gathered from the scene.

How the accident reportedly happened

According to eyewitness accounts, a Mali cargo truck reportedly collided with an Aboboyaa tricycle and continued without stopping.

Police officers who arrived at the scene were reportedly managing the situation and had stopped a loaded tipper truck. A Sprinter bus subsequently stopped behind the tipper.

Moments later, another loaded tipper truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into the rear of the Sprinter bus.

The impact pushed the Sprinter forward into the tipper truck ahead, trapping the bus between the two heavy vehicles.

13 people reportedly dead

Preliminary on ground information puts the death toll at 13, comprising 12 passengers in the Sprinter bus and the Aboboyaa rider.

The Aboboyaa rider was reportedly heading towards Dome Market. Information gathered indicates that the owner of the goods had taken another vehicle, leaving the rider behind.

The Sprinter driver was reportedly stopped to offload passengers when the second tipper truck crashed into the bus.

A separate collision involving a Suzuki mini car and a Toyota Camry was also reported at the scene.

The following vehicles have been identified in connection with the accident:

• Toyota Camry: Registration GE 6578-16 — Ash colour
• Vehicle: Registration GS 7133-22 — Orange colour
• Tipper truck: Registration GN 1528-23 — Red colour
• Sprinter bus: Registration GE 6615-22 — Black

The identification of the vehicles is based on information provided from the scene and may be subject to confirmation by the police and other investigating authorities.

Public raises concerns over traffic control

Some members of the public at the scene have questioned the positioning of the police barricade.

They argued that traffic should have been stopped further back at John Teye, near the Latter Day Saints Church, to give approaching motorists more time to slow down or stop.

However, these claims remain allegations from members of the public and should not be treated as an established cause of the crash until the police investigation is completed.
