NADMO Issues Flood Alert Ahead of Bagre Dam Spillage from August 11

Accra, August 9, 2026 — The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a flood alert to communities in northern Ghana following notification that authorities in Burkina Faso will commence controlled spillage from the Bagre Dam from Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The planned spillage is expected to increase the volume of water flowing downstream into Ghana through the White Volta River and its tributaries, potentially raising water levels and increasing the risk of flooding in communities located along riverbanks and other flood-prone areas.

In an alert issued by its North East Regional Office, NADMO urged residents, farmers, fishermen, herdsmen and other people living or working in vulnerable areas to take immediate precautionary measures to protect their lives and property.

The organisation has particularly advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone communities to consider moving to safer areas before water levels rise.

NADMO also warned residents against farming, fishing, grazing livestock or undertaking other activities within river channels and floodplains during the period of increased water flow.

Farmers urged to harvest early

Farmers whose farms are located along riverbanks have been advised to harvest their crops early, where necessary, to minimise potential losses from flooding.

Residents have also been encouraged to move valuables, foodstuffs, livestock and farming equipment away from areas considered vulnerable to flooding.

NADMO further cautioned the public against attempting to cross flooded roads, rivers, streams or bridges and urged residents to follow safety directives from NADMO, security agencies, district assemblies and other relevant authorities.

Public education intensified

NADMO said its district offices in the North East Region have been directed to intensify public education and sensitisation, particularly in communities along the White Volta and other vulnerable waterways.

The organisation said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as developments unfold.

The alert comes as Ghana continues to experience heightened concerns over flooding during the rainy season, particularly in communities located along major waterways.

Regions likely to be affected

Reports indicate that flood-prone areas in the North East, Upper East, Northern and Savannah Regions could face increased risks from the additional downstream water flow.

Authorities are therefore encouraging residents in vulnerable communities to take the warning seriously and prepare before the spillage begins.
