BREAKING NEWS: NDC DISTANCES ITSELF FROM ZOOMLION SANITATION CONTRACT INTERFERENCE

Accra, 25th April 2025
In a swift response to growing media reports, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has firmly denied any involvement in the Youth Employment Agency’s (YEA) ongoing decisions regarding the sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In a statement released today, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, clarified that the NDC Caucus has not authorized Parliament’s Sanitation Committee to interfere with the YEA’s handling of the sanitation module contract. According to Ayariga, the Chairman of the Sanitation Committee has assured leadership that neither he nor any committee member has taken any action to meddle in YEA’s affairs, contrary to what some media outlets have reported.
The statement further stressed that any comments made by individual members of the Sanitation Committee defending Zoomlion’s contract should be disregarded, as they do not reflect the official position of the Committee, Parliament, or the NDC Caucus.
In a strong message to local authorities, Ayariga also cautioned Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) against succumbing to pressure to award sanitation contracts to specific companies. He emphasized that Assemblies, following a directive issued during former President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, now receive 80% of their Common Fund directly and retain the autonomy to prioritize their own developmental needs.
This latest development underscores the NDC’s intention to maintain a clear boundary between political authority and the operational decisions of independent government agencies.
