Ghana's Parliament Erupts in Controversy Over Unsavory Comments

A firestorm of controversy has engulfed Ghana's Parliament following unsavory comments made against Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle. The remarks, which referred to her as the "daughter of a murderer," have sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Speaker, has strongly denounced the comments, describing them as "unwarranted, unjustified, and deeply offensive". The Speaker emphasized the need for civility, decency, respect, and decorum in parliamentary discourse, stressing that words have the power to inspire hope, foster national unity, and strengthen collective resolve.
The incident occurred on February 4, 2025, during parliamentary proceedings, when an unidentified Member of Parliament made the offending remark off-microphone. The comment was directed at Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, who was attempting to contribute to the discussion.
Article 115 of Ghana's 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, debate, and proceedings in Parliament. However, the Speaker noted that this privilege is not absolute and must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with parliamentary rules.
The Speaker has initiated a formal investigation to determine the identity of the Member responsible for the comment. The Committees of Privileges and Immunities, and Ethics and Standards will review the matter and report to the House.
In light of this incident, the Speaker extended apologies to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, her family, and the people of Anlo Dukor and Anloland. The Speaker urged all Members of Parliament to maintain vibrant but fair debates, characterized by truthful, candid, and civil language.
The Jerry John Rawlings Foundation has also petitioned the Speaker, condemning the remarks and calling for an investigation. The Foundation described the comments as "toxic and untruthful," damaging to Parliament's dignity and the nation's reputation.
As the investigation unfolds, Ghana's Parliament is poised to take a strong stance against unsavory comments and behavior, upholding the dignity and majesty of the institution.
