Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has directed the formal reintroduction of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill also known as the anti-gay bill to the 9th Parliament for consideration.

On February 10, 2026 during parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Bagbin directed that the bill be re-laid before the House.

This follows his earlier ruling that the previous version passed in February 2024 by the 8th Parliament expired upon that Parliament's dissolution.

He further explained that because the previous bill lapsed without receiving presidential assent from former President Akufo-Addo, it must now undergo the full legislative process again, starting with its first reading.

Speaker again revealed President John Dramani Mahama initially expressed interest in making it a government-sponsored bill, the Speaker clarified it would remain a private member’s bill.

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly indicated his readiness to sign the bill into law once it is passed by the current Parliament.
