The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has dismissed a motion filed by the Minority Caucus seeking to suspend the vetting of the acting Chief Justice, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie.

The Minority’s motion, aimed at halting the Appointments Committee’s vetting process over alleged procedural irregularities and concerns about judicial independence, was deemed unmeritorious by the Speaker.

Speaker Bagbin ruled that Parliament’s constitutional duty to vet and approve nominees cannot be obstructed by political disagreements, adding that due process must be followed to ensure the judiciary’s functionality is not compromised.

The ruling clears the way for the vetting to proceed as scheduled, despite strong objections from the Minority leadership.
