The incident, which circulated widely on social media, reportedly involved officers attempting to recover an outstanding loan of about GH¢300 from the woman. During the confrontation, one of the officers allegedly seized the woman’s mobile phone while she was carrying a baby. As she attempted to retrieve it, she fell to the ground, sparking public outrage online.

Following the backlash, management of Bills Micro-Credit announced that the officers involved have been suspended and handed over to police to assist with ongoing investigations into the incident.

The company said the action was taken on the directive of its board while it conducts internal inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the altercation.

The incident has reignited concerns among consumer rights advocates about aggressive debt-collection practices within Ghana’s microcredit sector, with many calling for stronger regulation and protection for borrowers.

Police investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
