Ghana Refers Maritime Boundary Dispute with Togo to International Arbitration
Accra, February 20, 2026 — The Government of Ghana has formally notified the Government of Togo of its decision to seek international arbitration to delimit the maritime boundary between the two countries.
In a press statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office on Friday, February 20, 2026, the government said the matter will be referred to arbitration under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
According to the statement, the decision follows eight years of negotiations between Ghana and Togo which have not resulted in an agreed outcome.
The government explained that the move is intended to prevent an escalation of incidents that have created tensions between institutions in both countries, while also promoting an amicable resolution and preserving the longstanding good relations between Ghana and Togo.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
