Police Arrest Alleged Leader of Mobile Phone Snatching Syndicate in Accra
Accra — The Ghana Police Service has arrested the alleged leader of a mobile phone snatching syndicate operating in parts of Accra following what authorities describe as sustained intelligence-led surveillance.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Nii Amamu Offei, also known as Gaza or Hero, was arrested around Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Saturday, April 4, and is currently assisting police with investigations.
According to police sources, the suspect allegedly approached unsuspecting victims pretending to know them before asking to use their phones under the pretext of entering his correct contact number. He would then reportedly speed off on a motorbike with the victim’s phone.
Police say five assorted mobile phones were retrieved from him at the time of his arrest, with surveillance footage reportedly linking him to multiple incidents.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court as investigations continue.
