Police Probe Deadly Clashes at Homowo Festival in Sowutuom and Anyaa

Accra, August 31, 2025 – The Accra Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into violent clashes that marred the climax of the annual Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
According to police reports, the violence was triggered by a misunderstanding between followers of two rival chiefs during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi. The situation escalated into gunfire exchanges, and further attacks were reported at Olebu when some festival-goers attempted to leave the grounds.
Tragically, three people lost their lives in the clashes. They have been identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah alias Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

The injured are receiving treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police say additional personnel have been deployed to restore calm and maintain order in the affected communities. Intelligence-led operations are underway to track down and arrest all individuals involved in the disturbances.
The Accra Regional Police Command has strongly cautioned traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to respect agreed security arrangements during festivals and avoid actions that could endanger public safety.
